In Niger, after a two month stand-off between the junta and France, the French ambassador has left the country and French troops are getting ready to pull out. Emmanuel Macron said he’d taken the decision to leave the country because Niger was no longer interested in fighting terrorism.

In late July, Niger became the fourth former French colony in the Sahel to go through a coup in just three years. The political upheaval threatens to destabilise a region already struggling to contain groups linked to ISIS and Al Qaeda.

Mayeni Jones gained rare access to Niger and sent this report.

The death of Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin will test the resilience of operations by thousands of mercenaries active in Africa's Sahel region.

Wagner has a decentralised command on the continent where it provides security for some African leaders in exchange for mineral and other strategic economic and military concessions.

But given Prigozhin's death, how does this affect Wagner going forward? And does this impact Russia and Africa's relationship?

The BBC's Beverly Ochieng explains.

Another African leader toppled by the Army - whose turn will it be next? The fall of Gabon's leader Ali Bongo has rattled the Continent's autocrats and democrats alike.
Cameroon and Rwanda both made hurried changes to their top military within hours of the coup in Libreville.
And they have good reason to be nervous: Since World War Two, 45 of the continent's 54 countries have suffered attempted coups, and military takeovers are on the rise again now.
The coup in Gabon is just the latest in a string of recent military takeovers on the African continent. Five other countries in the region have also seen coups. Most recently in Niger last month. In 2022, Burkina Faso saw two putsches in less than nine months. In 2021, Sudan's Prime Minister Abdulla Hamdok was ousted by military force, the same year Guinea and Mali experienced their own coups d'états.

In 2019, Ghana had the world’s fastest-growing economy after it doubled economic growth.

In 2023, prices of goods are rising by 40% down from 54% in December 2022, which was the highest in 2 decades.

As a result, the country which the World bank described as a rising star saw an unprecedented 3-day demonstration led by mainly young people who say government has mismanaged the economy.

But what caused the slide?

The military takeover in Niger has caused an international outcry with mounting pressure for the West African nation’s democratically elected president to be reinstated.

Although the US has cut some aid, it’s still skirting around calling this crisis a coup. Why?

Leaders from West Africa are set to meet at an emergency summit, after Niger’s army took power in a coup.

It comes after the EU suspended all security cooperation with the nation, and the US declared its "unflagging support" for ousted president Mohamed Bazoum - seen as a key Western ally in the fight against Islamist militants.

On Friday the head of the presidential guards unit Gen Abdourahmane Tchiani declared himself Niger's new leader, and there are concerns about which countries he will align with. The leader of Russia's Wagner mercenary group Yevgeny Prigozhin has reportedly described the coup as a triumph.
