Migrants in South Africa and beyond are facing such senseless acts of hostility despite Africa’s leading thinkers and prominent politicians repeatedly calling for no African to be regarded as a foreigner anywhere on the continent.
Julius Malema, the firebrand leader of South Africa’s Economic Freedom Fighters party, for example, has frequently expressed this sentiment and called on the continent to collapse its colonial borders.
Similarly, PLO Lumumba, the popular Kenyan public intellectual, has said, “No African country should declare any African persona non grata, it defeats the spirit of African unity.”
Such enlightened and inclusive thinking is admirable, but unfortunately, the political determination to fulfil the widely shared aspiration for a borderless Africa is still inadequate.

The Socio-Economic Rights And Accountability Project (SERAP) says Police, Electricity Sector, Education and the judiciary tops the list of most corrupt sectors in Nigeria.
This was disclosed on Wednesday at a town hall meeting organised in Abuja by SERAP on the need to mobilise citizen’s support for the fight against corruption.
SERAP’s corruption assessment survey revealed at the town-hall meeting indicates that corruption in Nigeria has not decreased in public offices in the last five years, despite the government’s effort to curb it.

The Central Bank of Nigeria, the central bank of Nigeria, has requested that all commercial banks in the nation engage in foreign exchange trading. This action differs from the earlier parallel rates about which Nigerians have long complained.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu mentioned having a single exchange rate applied to all transactions when he was inaugurated, albeit the new policy has not yet been formally established.
The implications of the strategy and how it would help the local populace have once more been questioned.

Achike chude speaks about the Russia Africa summit and suggest ways Nigeria can leverage on the partnership for greater gains.
At least eight states in Nigeria have failed to attract any foreign investments but piled up N194.09bn debt between 2019 and 2022.
Data from the Capital Importation reports of the National Bureau of Statistics revealed that Bayelsa, Gombe, Ebonyi, Jigawa, Kebbi, Taraba, Yobe and Zamfara did not attract any foreign investments to their states.
Meanwhile, data from the Subnational Debt reports of the Debt Management Office showed that these states had a combined domestic and external debt of N710.38bn in 2019. By 2022, the combined debt of these eight states had risen to N904.47bn, showing a difference of N194.09bn.
According to the World Bank, the increase in debts are due to low allocation from the Federation Account, which weakens the fiscal condition of the states.

There have been mixed reactions following the CBN’s introduction of the revised cash withdrawal limits on December 6, 2022, following its recent currency redesign project.
While some regard the initiative as a political witch-hunt, others have applauded it as a strategic move towards addressing the endemic issues of corruption in the system, and a step in the right direction in responding to the security challenges bedevilling the country as well as a commendable initiative towards helping the country to achieve its cashless policy targets and formalising the huge informal sector, among other benefits.
While the new directive could bode well for tackling illicit transactions and improving the payments ecosystem, it might also have some adverse effects including Potential inconvenience for individuals and organisations with high cash transaction needs, Limited infrastructure to support digital payments among others.
