Festus Osifo, the National President of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), has revealed that the federal government has reinstated the subsidy on petrol, despite the official government policy of ending the subsidy regime since May.

This development comes after President Bola Tinubu had announced the removal of fuel subsidy in his inaugural speech on May 29th, which led to an increase in fuel prices from N197 to a range between N480 and N570. Subsequently, the pump price was further adjusted to N620.

According to Osifo, who also serves as the president of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), the government continues to pay subsidies on petrol due to the high cost of crude oil in the international market and unfavorable exchange rates. He emphasized that the government can only cease subsidizing petroleum when it effectively manages the exchange rate and ensures an adequate supply of petroleum to stabilize prices.

President Muhammadu Buhari justified his administration's high levels of borrowing during a virtual commissioning event, saying they were a conscious decision to combat poverty, foster economic growth, and provide job opportunities for Nigerians.

Buhari emphasised that the borrowed money was used to invest in publicly verifiable infrastructure projects while admitting worries about the debt profile.

Under his direction, Nigeria's infrastructure stock increased from 20% to over 40% of GDP, with the completed bridges and other projects serving as a symbol of the nation's dedication to economic growth.

However, there were growing concerns over the significant increase in borrowing from China, which rose by 209.15% during Buhari's tenure, resulting in a total bilateral loan increase of 219.91% from $1.58 billion in June 2015 to $5.07 billion in December 2022.

The United Nations reports more than 800,000 people have fled Ukraine since Russia attacked last week, but many foreign nationals trying to escape have described racist discrimination and abuse, saying they were turned away from buses and at the border, while Ukrainians were welcomed with open arms. We speak with one of the African students who documented their experiences on Twitter with the hashtag #AfricansInUkraine. Nigerian student Alexander Somto Orah says the discriminatory treatment he and other African students faced started at the train station in Kyiv and continued at the border with Poland. “We started protesting and telling them they have to let us go, that this is rubbish. They take in like a hundred Ukrainians and then take in like two Africans. It doesn’t make sense, because there are more Africans there than Ukrainians at the border,” Orah recalls. “So we started pushing, and the police cocked their guns and pointed at us guns and told us that they’re going to shoot us.” Orah eventually made his way to Warsaw and is now helping other students to cross.

Authorities in Nigeria destroyed more than one million expired doses of AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine, Wednesday, even as the West African country’s vaccination rate has almost doubled in the last one week amid a spike in confirmed infections.

The expired doses - numbering 1,066,214 - were destroyed at a landfill in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, a week after the nation said it will no longer accept donated COVID-19 vaccines with short shelf lives.

National Food and Drug Administration Director Professor Mojisola Adeyeye said they "are one of the few agencies in Africa that tests our vaccine before use" and that they had informed donors of this fact.

Vaccination is also rapidly picking up in the most populous country in Africa, which has set an ambitious goal of fully vaccinating 55 million of its 206 million citizens before February 2022, although only 2% have received their two doses so far.

The West African country has been seeing a spike in confirmed infections since it detected the highly-infectious omicron variant in late November, recording a 500% increase in the number of cases in the past two weeks, according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control.

The 2,123 new COVID-19 infections Nigeria confirmed on Tuesday was the highest daily tally since January this year and the second highest since the pandemic.

*Nigeria and Benin have divergent views on how to combat the smuggling phenomenon that affects them and hinders trade at their borders.*

Do you recall the statement of the Nigerian businessman Aliko Dangote at the Central Bank of Nigeria's Consultative Round Table on Growth on June 8 in Lagos, Nigeria?

"No country can survive with a neighbour like Benin," refering to smuggling, adding that Benin is partly responsible for the African giant's poor economic performance.

Benin reacted to the…

Nigeria's poor ranking on female participation in national politics has prompted an effort to address the problem. Nigeria is ranked 179 out of 187 countries that have women in parliaments, according to the global body, the Inter-Parliamentary Union. Activists are attributing this poor rating to a huge gap in gender equality in Nigeria. Now, Nigerian lawmakers are looking to pass a bill that will increase the number of women's representation at the country's parliament. Correspondent Phil Ihaza, reports in Abuja with more.

Nigeria grows 63 million metric tons of cassava (also known as yuca or manioc) every year, but most of the country's supply is eaten locally as fufu or garri. Experts say Nigeria could be missing out on billions in exports of lucrative cassava products like bubble tea pearls, starch, or ethanol. Challenges along the country's entire supply chain have caused hundreds of millions of dollars in cassava spoilage. But one entrepreneur, Yemisi Iranloye, thinks she has the solution. She's introduced higher-yielding seed varieties and moved processing plants closer to farms. Now, her farmers earn four times more for their product, and her cassava starch and sorbitol have landed her clients like Nestle and Unilever. Could Yemisi's model be the way for Nigeria to feed itself and cash in on exports?
