The United Nations and the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, have warned Nigeria against violence during the 2023 general election.

Niger Coup 2023 LIVE News | West African Bloc ECOWAS Activates Force For Possible Niger Intervention


The West African bloc ECOWAS on Thursday ordered the activation of a standby force for possible use against the junta that took power in Niger in July, saying it wanted a peaceful restoration of democracy but all options including force were on the table.

After a summit of its heads of state in the Nigerian capital Abuja, the bloc pledged to enforce sanctions, travel bans and asset freezes on those preventing the return to power of democratically elected President Mohamed Bazoum.

“No option is taken off the table, including the use of force as a last resort,” said Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, the ECOWAS chair.

“I hope that through our collective effort we can bring about a peaceful resolution as a roadmap to restoring stability and democracy in Niger,” he said. “All is not lost yet.” After Tinubu spoke, an official communique was read out which included a resolution asking the bloc’s defence chiefs to “activate the ECOWAS Standby Force with all its elements immediately”.

According to a spokesperson for the electoral commission, around 52.4% of registered voters are aged between 18-and 35-year-old.
Voters will choose between the incumbent President, Julius Maada Bio, of the Sierra Leone People's Party, and Samura Kamara, leader of main opposition party, the All-People’s Congress.
In a joint statement by the ECOWAS and the AU Missions, there are concerns over "violence and intimidation" reported in some parts of the country, they warned that the incidents could mar the peaceful conduct of the elections.
The mission met with 13 presidential candidates and called on all political stakeholders to do their part toward ensuring a peaceful electoral process in line with national, regional and international standards.

The economic community of West African States is considering the use of force to restore constitutional order in the Niger Republic.
At the ECOWAS extraordinary summit held in Abuja earlier today, President Bola Tinubu who is the Chairman of ECOWAS heads of state and government described the coup in Niger Republic as an assault on ECOWAS.
Some of the resolutions made at the extraordinary session are the imposition of a no-fly zone on the Niger Republic. ECOWAS also warned the military junta that it will be held responsible for the safety of pres. Mohammed Bazoum and his family.

Niger's junta on Tuesday said that it was open to talks to resolve a regional crisis caused by last month's military coup, while Russia and the United States called for a peaceful resolution. Western powers and democratic African governments have called for the coup leaders to reinstate ousted President Mohamed Bazoum, who they have detained since July 26, but the military leaders have refused and rejected attempts at negotiation. West African army chiefs will meet on Thursday and Friday in Ghana to prepare for a possible military intervention, which the main regional bloc, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), has threatened to launch if diplomacy fails.

The African Union (AU) says it supports the West African regional bloc ECOWAS' decisions on Niger and has called on the international community to save the life of President Mohamed Bazoum, whose detention conditions are deteriorating.
