Although the attempted coup d’etat was successfully repelled by the country’s security forces, it again brought to the fore the wave of coups that have hit Africa’s Sahel region in recent months.

In 18 months, coups have been recorded in Mali, Chad, Sudan and Burkina Faso, where soldiers have taken matters into their hands and toppled elected governments.

As events in Guinea-Bissau unfolded, the regional political and economic block, ECOWAS, as well as the United States, issued condemnations.

But one thing these coups are making clear is that there’s very little international bodies can issue in the way of deterrents.

To discuss the rising wave of coups in Africa and the lessons that can be learnt from them, is Ambassador Joe Keshi, a retired Nigerian career diplomat, who served in many countries around the world including the United States, Togo, Ethiopia and Sierra Leone, where he participated as a facilitator in the negotiations that ended the 10-year civil war in that country.
