We navigate the legal intricacies surrounding the nationwide strike declared by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), and other affiliated unions. This strike, initiated in defiance of a court order, is in response to the alleged brutalization of NLC president, Joe Ajaero, and perceived maltreatment of workers in Imo State.

The Federal Government has labeled the strike as illegal, pointing to a court order restraining the unions from embarking on industrial action. In this session, we delve into the legal nuances of the situation, seeking expert insights to unravel the complexities surrounding the clash between the right to strike and legal constraints.

Join us as we explore the legal dimensions of the ongoing nationwide strike, assessing the implications, rights, and responsibilities of the involved parties. Tonight's discussion aims to provide clarity on the legal framework governing industrial actions and the broader impact on labor relations in Nigeria.

Mamelodi Sundowns emerged as the inaugural champions of the African Football League (AFL) following a 2-0 victory over Wydad Casablanca in the second leg, securing a 3-2 aggregate win. Despite trailing 2-1 after the away leg, Sundowns turned the tide with goals from Peter Shalulile and Aubrey Modiba at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria.

Wydad initially disrupted Sundowns' rhythm with intense pressing and fouls, but the hosts persevered. Shalulile capitalized on a rebound in first-half stoppage time, and Modiba doubled the lead five minutes into the second half after intercepting a wayward pass.

Needing two goals to win, Wydad couldn't break Sundowns' defence. In a tactical move, Sundowns deliberately took yellow cards for time-wasting in the tense finale. Although Wydad had a chance with Ayoub El Amloud's header, Sundowns held on for a historic victory, becoming the first AFL champions in the league's inaugural season. Coach Rulani Mokwena's strategic plan overcame Wydad's early pressure and capitalised on their mistakes.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the Trade Union Congress (TUC), and its affiliates, including the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), have commenced a nationwide strike, defying a restraining court order prohibiting them from embarking on the industrial action.

The strike was declared by the two major labor unions, NLC and TUC, in response to the brutalization of NLC President, Joe Ajaero, in Imo State on November 1. The attack occurred during an NLC protest against the Imo State government's alleged maltreatment of workers in the state.

Despite an ex-parte application brought before the court by the Federal Government of Nigeria and the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, President of the Court Justice Benedict Kanyip issued a restraining order to halt the nationwide strike scheduled to commence on November 14.

In defiance of the court order, the NLC, TUC, and affiliated unions proceeded with the strike. Notably, bank and electricity workers have also joined the industrial action.

This development underscores the tensions between labor unions and the government, with the strike reflecting the unions' protest against the reported assault on their president and broader issues related to workers' welfare in Nigeria.

In South Africa, political tension and economic woes surrounding the president have led to growing concerns in the business community. According to the South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry, business confidence fell to 93 point 2 in May, the lowest since October. Well one top leader of the ruling ANC says President Jacob Zuma could be on his way out before his term ends in 2019. Secretary General, Gwede Mantashe, says the unravelling scandal has left a massive dent on the party. Zuma is accused of handing state assets to a wealthy Indian business family known as The Guptas. Thousands of leaked emails allege many well paid government contracts were awarded to the family. The leaks further claim that the Guptas were planning to buy several media houses that are critical of Zuma.

The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) has acknowledged that Uganda has made significant reforms in seven areas, including the adoption of a national Anti-Money Laundering law and Countering the Financing of Terrorism.

These reforms also encompass enhanced mutual legal assistance, maintaining statistics, and the development and implementation of risk-based supervision in the financial and designated non-financial businesses and professions sectors.

However, it's worth noting that major African economies like Nigeria and South Africa were added to the grey list earlier this year, in February. The status of Nigeria on the list is uncertain, and it remains to be seen if the country will be removed from the grey list based on any subsequent evaluations and reforms.

The Labour Party and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have jointly called for the complete cancellation of the governorship election in Imo State, citing alleged irregularities that, according to them, marred the electoral process.

During a press conference held in Owerri, the capital of Imo State, the governorship candidate of the Labour Party, Athan Achonu, and his PDP counterpart, Samuel Anyanwu, expressed dissatisfaction with the election, describing it as below standard and a stain on the integrity of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Conversely, the All Progressives Congress (APC) chairman in Imo State, Macdonald Ebere, offered a contrasting view. He described the election as free, fair, and credible, urging other political parties to unite, accept the election outcome, and extend their support to Governor Hope Uzodimma of the APC for the development of the state in the next four years.

The differing perspectives on the election outcome highlight the contentious nature of the electoral process in Imo State, with one side calling for cancellation due to alleged irregularities, while the other asserts the fairness and credibility of the results. The aftermath of the election is likely to be shaped by the responses of the political parties involved and the decisions made by relevant authorities.
