The US does not want to see firefights in hospitals in the Gaza Strip where civilians are caught in the crossfire, White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan has said.
“The United States does not want to see firefights in hospitals where innocent people, patients receiving medical care, are caught in the crossfire and we’ve had active consultations with the Israeli Defense Forces on this,” Sullivan told CBS News’ “Face the Nation” program.

It looks like South Africans are nowhere near finding out who's financing political parties.
The political party funding bill has been lying idle for six months.
The IEC says the unit that's meant to implement the legislation will only be operational from April.
This means you are only likely to find out AFTER voting in the May elections, who is financing your political party of choice.
Another hurdle is that President Cyril Ramaphosa is yet to sign the bill into law.
For more on this, I'm joined on the line by the IEC's Masego Shiburi. Courtesy #DStv403

The South African government will now recall its diplomats in Israel for consultation, saying it is disappointed by the refusal of the Israeli government to respect international law and its continued undermining of the UN resolutions for the implementation of a ceasefire.

What will this mean for relations between the two countries in future - and is this the correct move, in line with the ANC's support of Palestinian rights.

Prof Andre Thomashausen - UNISA professor emeritus of International Law.

Host: Adebola Adedugba
Guest: Augustine S. M. Tamba, Head Of Secretariat, Liberia Elections Observation Network, Monrovia, Liberia

Liberians are heading to the polls today, Tuesday, November 14, 2023, for a presidential runoff election following a first-round vote a month ago where the two leading candidates were separated by just over 7,000 votes.

The runoff features incumbent and former football star George Weah and former Vice President Joseph Boakai. President Weah narrowly won the first round but fell short of obtaining more than 50% of the vote, triggering the need for a runoff.

In the first round, Weah secured 43.8% of the vote, while Boakai received 43.4%. Both candidates have been working to build political alliances with the 18 other candidates who ran in the first round, none of whom received more than 3% of the vote.

This runoff election is a crucial moment for Liberia, as voters decide between the incumbent and a former Vice-President, shaping the political landscape of the country for the upcoming term.

South Africa’s ruling party has suffered huge losses in local elections. The African National Congress is still leading overall, but the party of Nelson Mandela is seeing its worst electoral performance since the end of apartheid, with about 90% of ballots counted. Political analysts say voters are frustrated with the country's high unemployment and rampant political corruption. Results in Johannesburg, the country's largest city and economic hub, as well as the area around Pretoria, the capital, are too close to call where the opposition democratic alliance is looking to make an inroad. VOA’s Esther Githui-Ewart gets an update from VOA’s Anita Powell, who is in South Africa.
