It has been billed as an "emergency summit" and is taking place in Saudi Arabia's capital, Riyadh.

The summit has seen the Arab League summit merge with the meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation.

Israel must stop killing babies and women in Gaza, French President Emmanuel Macron has told the BBC.

In an exclusive interview at the Élysée Palace, he said there was "no justification" for the bombing, saying a ceasefire would benefit Israel.

While recognising Israel's right to protect itself, "we do urge them to stop this bombing" in Gaza.

But he also stressed that France "clearly condemns" the "terrorist" actions of Hamas.

The South African government has said it would recall all its diplomats from Israel to “signal” its concern over the situation in Gaza, Reuters reports.

“The South African government has decided to withdraw all its diplomats in Tel Aviv for consultation,” Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, a minister in the president’s office, told a press briefing.

Thousands of people heed a call to take to the streets of Cape Town today in support of the Palestinian people in Gaza. The South African Al-Quds Foundation organised the action as the war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas continues.
