About 50 minutes drive deep into the Liberian rain forest -- about 7 kilometres from the border with Côte d'Ivoire -- lies the village of Sawien. Since the start of the crisis in Côte d'Ivoire, the village has seen the arrival of hundreds of people, all fleeing the fighting in their country, running for their lives.

The people we meet are not from one political side or the other, they are just "citizens" as they call themselves, who don't want to die.

Christelle Touhoua is one of them. She is 17 years old and fled her home with her two-week-old baby. She walked for hours in the forest, trying to reach a safe place. The baby has never been vaccinated -- a major risk in such an environment.

Among the arrivals, there is a large number of women and young children. They have walked for hours to reach the border and their host village. The quirk of fate is that these refugees from Côte d'Ivoire are now being hosted by Liberian families that they themselves once took in during the conflict in Liberia.

Host community resources depleted

This dramatic influx of people is putting a real strain on host communities, with their very limited resources already overstretched. The population of the village has almost doubled, which means that more and more people need food. The village's resources have nearly been exhausted as this refugee crisis endures. People are hungry: sweet potatoes and cassava leaves are now the main source of food.

In Sawien, there is also no electricity, but the biggest concern is that there is no water. The village well is almost dry. As a woman works the pump, only a few drops come out. People are relying on a small river nearby. Children bathe in it, women wash their clothes in it, and people drink from its dark stagnant pools.

Unsurprisingly, lots of people are suffering diarrhoea and most of the children have already developed skin infections. Access to healthcare in these remote villages is a challenge. It can take hours to reach the nearest health centre and much longer if you need a hospital. The Red Cross, through its door-to-door activities, is trying to register people who are sick, alerting the local health authorities if necessary.

No aid from anywhere has reached these villages and hundreds more people are scattered along the border, hidden in the forest.

Since the beginning of the crisis and as of 31 March, UNHCR has registered 30,007 people crossing the border from Côte d'Ivoire to the county of Grand Gedeh. In the last two weeks, and because the fighting is moving towards western Côte d'Ivoire, there has been a significant increase in the number of people crossing each day.

Refugees: physically and emotionally exhausted

There are serious concerns for both refugee and host populations. Access to clean water, food, latrines, basic shelter and health services are urgently needed.

The refugees are particularly vulnerable as they left their homes with nothing. They are both physically and emotionally exhausted.

"We ran away from our country because we were scared to die, but now I feel that we will die if we stay here," says one refugee who crossed the border with his eight children. "We are calling on the international community to come and help us, otherwise our children will die, one after the other."

This film produced by the Firestone Plantations Company recounts efforts by the government of Liberia, the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company, and the Liberian Institute of the American Foundation for Tropical Medicine to improve the health and nutritional status of Liberian citizens, particularly those working on rubber plantations. The program notes that a healthy work force is necessary both for the betterment of Liberia and for the economic success of companies operating rubber, coffee, and other plantations in the country. The following tropical diseases found in Liberia are shown and discussed: leprosy, yaws, onchocerciasis, Bancroftian filariasis, tuberculosis, keloid, ainhum, tropical ulcer, trypanosomiasis, and smallpox. The film is narrated over extensive footage of Liberians in villages, streams and forests, attending clinics and screenings, and being treated by health care workers. Shots include: workers and villagers with a range of diseases and conditions; a leprosy clinic; research laboratories; collecting snails; and collecting mosquitoes for research.

General Butt Naked aka Joshua Blahyi is a complicated figure. He is now a Liberian Christian missionary helping victims of Liberia's first civil war rebuild their lives. In the early 90s, he was one of Liberia's most brutal warlords. While literally naked, and often while wielding a machete, he led an army of coked-up, brainwashed child soldiers into committing almost unimaginable atrocities. He committed child sacrifices and regularly engaged in cannibalism. And there were others nearly as brutal as he was. Liberia in the 90s was basically hell on earth. It was a nation of sexual abuse and murder and corruption and chaos. How did things get so bad? Today we learn how Liberia was formed and how decades of oppression led to two incredible bloody civil wars.

The current outbreak of Ebola in West Africa is probably the greatest new infectious disease threat to humans since the emergence of HIV; the WHO has declared it a global health emergency. In addition to the lives taken directly by the disease it is paralysing health services, trade and the livelihoods of some of the poorest in the world. It also poses a threat to other countries in Africa, and cases will occasionally be imported to Europe and elsewhere. This talk will cover the emergence of the disease, how the epidemic has developed, and what we can do to combat the threat posed by Ebola both in Africa and elsewhere.

UNICEF, in collaboration with the Government of Liberia, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and other partners, launched the Peacebuilding, Education and Advocacy (PBEA) programme in 2012. It was implemented by the Government of Liberia (MoE, the Ministry of Youth and Sports (MoYS), the Ministry of Internal Affairs’ Peacebuilding Office (MIA-PBO) and international NGO partners. Despite the epidemic challenge, the PBEA program was able to achieve the following:

Increased access to quality education for 2,798 children and adolescents.

Enhanced capacity of 126 ECD, ALP and ABE teachers and caregivers to deliver conflict-sensitive education services.

Improved learning environments that provided teaching and learning materials and renovated classrooms for 5,646 children and adolescents from ECD through to Grade 12.

Increased Ebola community awareness, prevention and control campaigns in the counties through training and deployment of 15,288 teachers, principals, community members and national volunteers.

Messaging of schools reopening and related safety cautions through the Come to School National Emergency Education Radio Programme across Monrovia, reaching approximatively 32 per cent of the school-age population.

Development, in collaboration with the MoE and other education-sector partners, of the Schools Reopening Protocols, which defined in detail the responsibilities of students, teachers, parents, communities and education administrators in ensuring a safe, Ebola-free school environment.

Healthcare, a crucial sector of any nation’s success. A great healthcare system does not need a complex budget. However, a good healthcare system should be equipped with the right apparatuses and employees to ensure quality is provided to patients at all time. But how can this be accomplish in a country like Liberia, which operates with many deficits?

I suggest we increase regulatory oversight, which will provide critical coordination, in addition to an increase in private healthcare entities to increase competition. This video provide a list of steps that one must take in order to establish a healthcare practice. Knowing these guidelines can help the process of doing so. Therefore, it is recommended that additional conversation be had and the right people are connected to in order to begin the process of establishing an appropriate healthcare business venture.

For more info, please contact me @jarnyneh@gmail.com. I can provide a paper copy of everything I listed in the video.

Glad that this episode ended up being just as cool :D. While our dictatorship has it's problems, I fear that supporting any particular theocratic coup could end up landing us into a holy war as the most followed religion in our country is Protestantism at 18% as well as Sunni Islam at 8% the rest are a smorgasbord of different animist "Pagan" religions. What do you guys believe we should do? Glory to Liberia!, http://www.twitch.tv/agrippamaxentius

Inspired by European Mobility Week, tThe European Union in partnership with the Ministry of Transport and the German Cooperation and with the support of Orange, UNIDO and CICA Motors, was involved in createding an unforgettable unmemorable experience for Monrovia. inspired by the European Mobility Week, held across Europe in September. For a full day on 25th November 2017 part of Broad Street and surrounding areas were completely closed to motorized transport allowing citizens to experience the city in an entirely different way through a wide range of educational and leisure activities.
According to statistics, Liberia loses up to 7% of its GDP due to insufficient road safety measures and high levels of traffic related deaths and injuries. The Safe Streets Festival was organized to increase public awareness about road safety.
The event saw a massive turnout of people of all ages and backgrounds who poured into the streets to take part in a 5-km run and family walk, sports activities, games for children, culture and entertainment activities, as well quizzes and discussions at the European Union and Road Safety Education stands. A large market fair displayed locally made fashion, food and beauty products as well as arts and crafts by Liberian SMEs while a rich cultural programme sponsored by the European Union with performances by key Liberian artists and cultural troupes attracted large crowds well into the night.
The festival was one of its a kind and residents of Monrovia. Local people said they could not remember any such event being held since before the civil war in Liberia.
