- What are the debt trajectories in sub-Saharan Africa and which countries are most vulnerable to being in debt distress?
- What are the risks for debt sustainability associated with relatively new and less concessional sources of finance?

IDS Annual Lecture 2019 – From dictatorship to democracy: the role of women in politics in The Gambia

The Gambia, once viewed as an improbable nation, suffering the fate of many other African countries bedevilled with coups and dictatorial regimes, has gone on to prove itself not only as a viable state, but also as a beacon of democracy in Africa.

Vice President of The Gambia and IDS alum, Isatou Touray, will explore how The Gambia dealt with the crisis of democracy that existed in the country and how women and the youth led the way in shaping progressive change. She will reflect on The Gambia’s experience and discuss its broader implications for contemporary politics in Africa and beyond.

China's Foreign Affairs ministry has defended the country's continued assistance to African nations. Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Lu Kang told journalists in Beijing that skepticism over China's role in Africa by the west will not stop China from growing its ties with Africa. He was responding to a questions over western media criticism of China's support for the construction of a new headquarters for the West Africa regional grouping ECOWAS.

It is said that Africa breeds dictatorship. This may not be true but when you look closely, you would see that Africa has actually produced some of the most brutal and ruthless dictators. The regime of some of these men was characterized by terror, horror, bloodshed and chaos. The surprising thing was that some of these dictators helped their countries achieve economic prosperity while some destroyed everything their countries struggled to achieve.
In this video, we will look at some of the most brutal African tyrants of all time. But first if you are new here welcome, be sure to subscribe and

The Continental Free Trade Area deal is the most ambitious effort to free up trade flows within the African continent in decades, but it is far from a done deal. The deal needs to be approved at country level, by national legislators, and protectionist instincts there could easily derail it. 44 countries signed the treaty earlier in March, but Nigeria and South Africa - the continent's 2 largest economies - weren't among them. As CGTN's Ramah Nyang reports, there are more hurdles to overcome.

African Start-up Investment Summit 2020 - Part 3 - An aligned investment process in Africa.

This is Part 3 of 3 of the online African Start-up Investment Summit 2020, brought to you by AfricArena and Founders Factory Africa.

The first part of this webinar brought together prominent institutional investors and enablers in Africa. We hear from Julia Price, Capital Lead at Endeavor South Africa about her work to create a common and standardised terms sheet adapted to major African regulations. We hear from Eva Warigia, Executive Director at EAVCA, about their initiative on early-stage financing tools. And lastly, we hear from Shelley Lotz, Head of Regulatory Affairs at SAVCA, who presents the work underway by SAVCA on promoting a Start-up Act regulation in South Africa, and specifically on challenges relative to IP frameworks and how to address it.

The second part of the session showcased 3 exciting start-up founders, based in Africa, who are rapidly adapting to current conditions. The 3 start-ups that pitched virtually were: Kweza (South Africa), a platform that connects small traders with wholesalers to bring convenience; WeeGo (Morocco & Senegal), a platform that connects commuters to their local transportation network; and MVXchange (Nigeria), an on-demand B-2-B maritime service that connects vessel charterers directly to offshore support vessels operating in Africa.

At the time of this series of webinars, economies face the harsh ramifications of a slowdown in trade. Early-stage entrepreneurs and start-ups are especially affected by the resultant liquidity crisis and slowdown in consumer activity. Yet, these very same start-ups and entrepreneurs are likely going to innovate to lead our collective charge out of this economic trough as a continent, and will go on to provide economic opportunities for thousands across Africa in the post-COVID era. Join the collective effort to maximise their chances of succeeding for all of us. Founders Factory Africa and AfricArena have taken pride in making this series - bringing together key stakeholders of the ecosystem and shedding light on those taking actionable steps in these uncertain times and promote an aligned discourse in a solution-driven format.

Thanks for your support

The outlook for climatic changes in the African Sahel is bleak: spectacular temperature increases and further rainfall variability will continue to challenge the livelihoods of millions of inhabitants--sedentary and nomadic--that live in this vast region. These environmental impacts are usually understood as complicating long-standing problems of weak statehood, economic marginalization and physical insecurity and risk rendering the Sahel more prone to jihadist violence and various forms of migration. Yet this pessimistic--some would say alarmist--perspective on the Sahel as a zone of crisis is not the only possible one.

In this event co-organized by Columbia University and the University of Oxford, a panel entirely drawn from the Sahel region explored dynamic responses by various population groups to environmental change and focused on the social capital and economic opportunities that this part of Africa harbours. Panelists discussed historical perceptions of environmental degradation and sustainability and drew attention to both long-established indigenous forms of knowledge as well as innovative new approaches to land use, reforestation and resource management.

This event was the second in a new webinar series through which the Center on Global Energy Policy seeks to foreground the heterogeneity of perspectives found around the continent on what climate means in different African contexts and how more than one billion Africans are already living with extraordinary climatological variability and constraints on the use of natural resources. This session also formed part of the Oxford Department of International Development’s Climate Change and the Challenges of Development series.

-- Dr. Harry Verhoeven, Senior Research Scholar, Center on Global Energy Policy at Columbia University SIPA
