African citizens want democracy. Yet they recognize there is still much progress to be made, varying significantly by country. Africa Research Director Joseph Siegle looks at the prospects and trends of democratization across Africa. Africa has seen a decline in the number of authoritarian regimes since the 1980s, and yet the number of democracies has not increase commensurately. The result is a large number of governments in an intermediate "democratizing" stage.

Why does this matter for security? Because there is a strong link between governance and security. 10 of the 12 ongoing armed conflicts in Africa are happening in autocratic countries, and 90% of Africa's huge displaced population are from autocracies.

ASMARA - Eritrea: The African City of Women. Attractive Eritrean city of Asmara will be highlighted in today’s video. Asmara is the capital city of Eritrea. Asmara has a population of about One million people and it's one of the well-organized and neatest cities on the African continent.

Asmara, sometimes known as Asmera, is Eritrea's capital and largest city, located in the country's Central region. It sits at an elevation of 2,325 meters, making it the sixth highest capital in the world by altitude. The city is located at the tip of an escarpment that is both the northwestern edge of the Eritrean Highlands and the Great Rift Valley in neighboring Ethiopia.

In 2017, the city was declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its well-preserved modernist architecture. The site of Asmera was first settled in 800 BC with a population ranging from 100 to 1000. After long periods of conflict, four distinct villages merged to live together peacefully in the 12th century AD, and the city was created. Under Italian rule the city of Asmara was made capital of Eritrea in the last years of the 19th century.

You are watching Africa 54, your daily news and feature magazine-style program, from the Voice of America. Host Esther Githui-Ewart and a team of correspondents zero in on the big stories making news on the continent and around the world with context and analysis.

Top Stories:
After weeks of civic unrest in America, President Donald Trump is promising that his administration will aggressively pursue economic development in minority communities and confront health care disparities in those areas. The White House, without releasing details, says this is part of a four-point plan to build safety, opportunity and dignity.

U.S. lawmakers this week remembered the life of George Floyd, the black man who died while in police custody in Minneapolis on May 25th. Continuing nationwide protests over Floyd’s death have kept the pressure on the U.S. congress to address racial discrimination in American policing.

The World Health Organization says the rate of infection of the coronavirus is accelerating across Africa. The WHO says it took 98 days to reach 100,000 cases on the continent and just 19 days to reach 200,000 cases. Ten countries are driving Africa’s epidemic, accounting for 75 percent of nearly 208,000 cases on the continent, with five-thousand deaths reported, according to Matshidiso Moeti, the WHO’s Africa regional director.

South Africa, which has one of the highest COVID-19 rates on the continent, is representative of the rapid surge in infections and deaths. South Africa’s health ministry, late Thursday reported at least 74 more coronavirus deaths, and more than 3,100 new infections over a 24-hour period.

Namibia is receiving international praise after recording so few coronavirus cases. The southwest African nation has started to ease restrictions on social and economic activities. However, President Hage Geingob urged public vigilance as schools resume face-to-face classes and restaurants start receiving sit-down customers.

COVID-19 Diaries: In today's episode, we meet Steeve Manfoumbi, a 35-year-old second-hand clothing seller who works at the Marche du Mont Bouet market in Libreville, Gabon. Steeve is also the vice-president of the Association of Young Traders and tells us about the setbacks of hundreds of workers who share his profession.

Even before COVID-19, there was already high growth in education technology. Education is changing dramatically, with the rise of e-learning, and teaching undertaken remotely on digital platforms. But what does it take to develop and build e-learning platforms? For more, Africa 54’s Paul Ndiho spoke to a software engineer, Victor Oku Kanayo, co-founder, Children in Freedom School, in Nakuru, Kenya.

A54 Entertainment: One of Africa’s biggest living reggae stars, Rocky Dawuni, empowers us all to find our inner champion to rise up and triumph over life’s challenges. International reggae musician, activist, and Grammy nominee Rocky Dawuni recently released the visuals to his song “Champion Arise.” The American cable channel BET has enlisted the single in its new “BET Soul” playlist, but the music video tells more of the song’s story. Music Time In Africa host Heather Maxwell catches up with the artist from inside Wei Ye Oteng studios in Accra, Ghana.

In Senegal, traditional wrestling has its roots in the culture and community of rural villages, particularly among the Serer people.

What began as tribal preparations for battle developed into village ritual and soon a form of entertainment. Men traditionally fought at village festivals after the harvest season as a way of attracting women, proving their virility and bringing honour to their communities.

But in the past 50 years, traditional Senegalese wrestling has grown exponentially to become a major national sport for both men and women - with celebrity fighters competing for big prize money, in large stadia and in front of thousands of fans.

"We can say that it is not just a sport," says sociologist Aly Tandian. "It has always been a socially stimulating factor in the Senegalese society."

"Today, there are villages that have become well known in all of Senegal because they have given birth to great wrestlers," he adds.

Today, the professional wrestlers at major events - like "Bombardier" and Eumeu Sene - are household names, winning over $80,000 a fight.

Up-and-coming fighters like "Lacrymogene", who we meet in this film, win more modest sums - from a few to a few hundred dollars. But the winnings mean that for some of the poorest Senegalese, wrestling can genuinely represent a means of clawing their way out of poverty.

Traditional wrestling is part of a wider phenomenon of combat sports in West Africa, including in countries like Gambia, Guinea and Gabon. In Senegal, the sport has attracted both genders, with the women's game now popular and well respected in its own right.

Olympic fighter Isabelle Sambou has won the African Championships nine times. Safiato Biola has competed in women's events in Europe and North Africa, and Anta Sambou says winning three golds at the 2017 Francophone Games has built her confidence and transformed her life.

"Wrestling is part of our culture," says Isabelle.

"If you wrestle when you're young, you can wrestle through your whole childhood, and as an adult you can still wrestle. Especially the girls, don't be afraid of a wrestler."

"I love my achievements so much that it has made me stronger," she says. "I also represent a force in my village, and that has made me reach the top."

In this film, we explore the popularity of traditional wrestling among Senegalese fighters and fans alike, men and women, urban and rural - from small village festivals to arena events in the capital, Dakar.

We look at wrestling as an expression of pride and cultural identity but also to show how sport - at even the lowest levels - can mean the difference for some between modest, local success and a miserable existence on the margins of society.

As Tandian says, "There are certain places, like the suburbs of Dakar, where young people only have two options: wrestling or leaving the country."
