Research in recent years has demonstrated that HMOs play a contributory role in protecting infants from disease in developing countries – the evidence is rudimentary, according to Andrew Prentice in this presentation, but promising.  He looks closely at babies in low and middle-income countries and compares their growth patterns with those in developed countries.  Two recent studies demonstrate that growth achieved was directly attributable to the number of HMOs found in the mother’s milk.  The presentation looks at the effect of the changing seasons in African countries on HMOs, as well as the differences seen in key HMOs between sick and healthy children in the cohorts. There is a proven global variation in the breastmilk microbiome.  Andrew Prentice notes that milk is not only there to nourish and protect the baby, but the milk is also there to protect the breast itself, which is important for the immune constituents of breastmilk.

In The Gambia, women often farm on degraded, unproductive land. The more fertile land is usually reserved for men. But things are changing. A government project is using simple technologies to reclaim degraded, swampy and unproductive land. 34000 hectares of land have already been reclaimed. Now, women like Awa Jagne - who used to battle to feed her children - can produce enough rice to support her family throughout the year.

SJM traveled back to america to handle some necessary family business activities. Mission complete and now its time to return home to West Afrika. Little does she or any of us know this will be the first of three tests needed to return HOME- The Gambia.

French companies and businesses depends on raw materials in Africa, At one point France was the highest exporter of goods and service to mostly west African countries like Ivory coast, Mali, Ghana, Senegal, Burkina Faso and covering even central Africa states like Cameroon, DRC Congo, Gabon and some west Africa countries like Nigeria and Ghana. With the emergence of China in Africa that has invested billions of Dollars into many Africa fastest growing economies like Egypt and South Africa and Rwanda, France has found itself dealing with huge economic challenge from China, United states of America, Germany and Canada. Germany once over took France as the largest European supplier of machinery and processed food to Africa countries and in 2001 Germany over took France as the main supplier. Countries like Belguim are facing coemption from other Asia countries like Japan South Korea and China. The French economy is dependent on its formal colonies mainly in west Africa, French products and companies also invest and do business with its main export countries like South Africa and Nigeria. Most Africa young business people visit France landing through the France international airport know as Charles de Gaulle international or Rossie in Paris. France has faced resistance in Mali Burkina Faso and Guinea over its presence in the region. France control a huge percentage of the French franc used in many west Africa countries zone know as either the CFA franc zone and control by the central bank of west African states call BEAC. France also was called out for its involvement of the ECO current which never came into circulations. France is home to several migrants from west and central African countries like Senegal, Mali and Ivory Coast. Unites states and China are dominating business relations with African countries while France loses its economic power. The recent US Africa summit is an example and the Sino Africa summit and the Turkish African summit plus the Russia Africa summit makes France position in Africa and growing challenge. The ongoing Russia Ukraine war has caused food shortage in several west Africa countries and France cannot fill the gap. Other countries like the The Netherlands also ahs businesses in Africa through the Netherland African business council. The Dutch embassies in Africa like in Nigeria and Cotonou also help deliver services for Africa business coming to the Netherlands. The France African summit in Montpellier was to bring French business people to interact with Africa young entrepreneur. France president Emmanuel Macron has visited African countries several time to fix France Africa relationships.

For the next 150 years, West African rulers and traders came across the Portuguese more than any other European nation. [There were also smaller trading missions led by the English and the French, but these were less frequent]. In the beginning, the Portuguese main motivations were: 1, an interest in the extensive gold production of Bono-Mansu and the Akan states; 2, competition with the Ottoman Empire to access this gold [the Ottomans had captured Constantinople in 1453, prompting a crisis in Christian Europe]; 3, the desire to find a trade route to markets in India around the Cape of Good Hope; 4, ever increasingly, the trade in enslaved persons.

By the 1590s, the Dutch began to rival the Portuguese as the major European trading nation in Africa. Their ships were bigger and better, and the goods they traded with African political leaders were of much higher quality. The Dutch had captured many of the main Portuguese trading stations in West Africa by 1650, especially at Gorée in Senegal (in 1621), at Elmina in Ghana (in 1637), and at Luanda in Angola (in 1641).

Ingredients:
Full cream milk: 500g (16.9oz)
Sugar : 3 tablespoon full or to your taste
Egg Yolks: 3
Corn starch: half tablespoon (increase amount if you want it thicker)
Vanilla essence for flavor
Pinch of salt (optional)


Method:
Warm the milk on low fire.
Mix the egg yolks, cornstarch and vanilla essence till it is very smooth.
Then come in with the warm milk and mix for about a minute.
Now put the mixture in a pan and put it on low fire till it thickens up (will take about 10 minutes).
Put off the fire , let it cool down a little and serve.
