With the rate of domestic violence increasing in light of Covid-19, what is the role of state institutions, including the police, in preventing and responding to violence against women? The second webinar in the Governance, Crime, and Conflict Initiative’s (GCCI) series discussed randomized evaluations funded by GCCI that address this question and its implications.
Hosted by J-PAL’s Crime and Violence Initiative, Governance Initiative, and Innovations for Poverty Action’s (IPA) Peace & Recovery Program, this webinar series showcases emerging results and policy lessons from the first three years of GCCI. J-PAL and IPA, with support from the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, jointly launched GCCI with the aim of increasing our understanding of effective policies to promote peace and good governance, reduce crime, and support individuals and communities recovering from conflict.

China’s impact on global development is growing through its investments, foreign aid contributions, and financing platforms such as the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank. On December 7, specialists on China’s economic development and fragile states will examine what the “China model” really is and whether China’s experiences can provide lessons on development for other countries, and discuss how Chinese investments and assistance might help mitigate or complicate local conditions in countries experiencing violent conflict.

The United States Institute of Peace works to prevent, mitigate, and resolve violent conflict around the world. USIP does this by engaging directly in conflict zones and by providing analysis, education, and resources to those working for peace. Created by Congress in 1984 as an independent, nonpartisan, federally funded organization, USIP’s more than 300 staff work at the Institute’s D.C. headquarters, and on the ground in the world’s most dangerous regions.
The COVID-19 pandemic has the potential to have significant effects on routine immunization programs due to the burden on the health system, physical distancing requirements and reluctance by people to seek vaccination. Previous outbreaks such as Ebola have resulted in lowered coverage of routine vaccines, leading to outbreaks of preventable disease like measles. What do we know about how countries are responding so far to protect their vaccine programs? What principles has WHO established to guide countries on routine immunization during the pandemic and as coronavirus infections subside?
