Rose will talk about the unspeakability of sanitation, toilets and shit, and how the social prudishness around our most inescapable bodily function causes huge damage to the economy, development and particularly the prospects of women. She'll look at sanitation issues in the developing world but also here, where 50% of public toilets been closed down, leaving many elderly trapped at home for fear of not finding a safe clean toilet.

After all, everybody poops.

Gaps, Opportunities and Recommendations

From Afghanistan to Yemen to Colombia, people with disabilities are routinely excluded from peacebuilding despite being impacted disproportionately during armed conflict. When they are included, it is most often as beneficiaries, not as full partners — and even then, participation is uneven, not reflecting the full diversity of persons with disabilities.

As we approach the two-year anniversary of U.N. Security Council Resolution 2475 on disability, armed conflict and humanitarian emergencies, now is an opportune moment for peacebuilding organizations, multilateral organizations, governments and organizations of persons with disabilities to jointly renew their commitment to the inclusion of people with disabilities in peacebuilding.

On June 16, USIP, the Harvard Law School Project on Disability and their fellow co-sponsors hosted a conversation on the gaps and opportunities in disability-inclusive peacebuilding and steps for the greater inclusion and participation of people with disabilities. This event was an official side event to the 2021 Conference of State Parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

In Northern Cyprus, a booming industry in higher education has lured many African students with the chance to work in Europe. Critical Systems Thinking: Lessons from the Ebola outbreak for the COVID-19 pandemic.
At the time of the 2014 Ebola outbreak in West Africa, Luis Sambo was Regional Director for Africa at the World Health Organization. He was responsible for leading the response to the outbreak. In this talk, he will look back at his experience with Ebola and will reflect from the perspective of Critical Systems Thinking (CST), on what went wrong and what could have been done better.

Mike Jackson will then take these lessons and apply them to the current COVID-19 epidemic in the UK. Using CST, he will examine the UK health system's lack of preparedness and will analyse the reasons for the failings in the Government’s response to the epidemic. The conclusion will be that CST can help improve the resilience of health systems to potentially catastrophic events, and inform appropriate responses when they do occur.

STORYLINE
US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton arrived in South Africa on Thursday evening, as part of a seven-nation tour of the continent.
She was greeted by South African officials at Johannesburg international airport.
Clinton arrived from Kenya, where she met Kenya's president Mwai Kibaki and prime minister Raila Odinga, and honoured the victims of the deadly 1998 al-Qaida-linked attacks on the American embassies in Kenya and Tanzania.
Speaking to a conference on Wednesday, Clinton sharply criticised Kenya's leadership for failing to implement reforms that were part of a power-sharing deal designed to end the postelection crisis, including not yet prosecuting anyone for the violence, as well as not doing enough to tackle corruption.
Both Kibaki and Odinga, who were rivals in a bitterly contested 2007 presidential election that led to violence in which more than 1,000 people were killed, were in the audience when Clinton made the comments.
On Thursday in Nairobi, she met beleaguered Somali President Sheik Sharif Sheik Ahmed at the US embassy and pledged to expand American support for Somalia's weak interim government and threatened sanctions against neighbouring Eritrea for aiding an extremist group she says is trying to launch worldwide militant attacks from Somalia.
South Africa is Clinton's second leg of a seven-nation tour of Africa. From South Africa, Clinton will travel to Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria, Liberia and Cape Verde.
