With many parts of the world facing closures again amid a resurgence of COVID-19 cases, WHO said they're aiming for 2 billion doses of a COVID-19 vaccine by the end of next year through their COVAX facility.

During Friday's briefing, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus urged countries that have not yet joined the COVAX facility to do so, adding that they're currently facing a funding gap of $35 billion and called that a "bargain" compared to what some countries are spending themselves to fight COVID-19.

Currently, almost 200 vaccine candidates are under different phases of testing, but there is no guarantee a single vaccine will work.

Agricultural lending is considered "high risk" by formal financial institutions, as farmers are more vulnerable to changes in weather, rainfall levels, pests, and infestations, as well as price fluctuations. As a result of these perceived and actual risks, loans for smallholder farmers require high rates of collateral. This situation is exacerbated for rural women, who often do not inherit and possess assets or properties that can be accepted by formal financial institutions as conventional forms of collateral.

This virtual dialogue of the Parliamentarians Actions for Gender Equality and Resilient Food Systems in Response to Covid-19 series brought together parliamentarians, financial institutions, and other main stakeholders to discuss the importance of developing alternative approaches for risk sharing and management that can increase women’s access to finance through alternative collateral requirements.

Join us for a virtual webinar examining the world of tropical disease through the lens of Malaria and Onchocerciasis (also known as Riverblindness). On the heels of a global pandemic, disease transmission finds itself in the spotlight. Some infectious diseases mitigated in developed countries continue to plague communities influenced by poverty, absence of clean water, and lack of medical care. Unaddressed, Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) weaken the global economy and increase the risk of their emergence or re-emergence in developed countries.

Uncover the ways in which governments, global agencies, and the private sector came together to defeat Riverblindness through the work of Bruce Benton, SAIS '68, author and manager of the World Bank/WHO cosponsored onchocerciasis control programs for two decades. Explore how groups are working to reduce the spread of Malaria both here and abroad with Dr. Clive Shiff, Professor Emeritus, Bloomberg School of Public Health. Finally, take a systems view of tropical disease as Dr. Chandresh Harjivan, BSPH '00, Co-Founder, President and Chief Operating Officer, SaponiQx, shares his experience working with agencies to accelerate access to health care innovations to solve complex health problems.

Riverblindness in Africa: Taming the Lion's Stare by Bruce Benton is available to purchase through the Johns Hopkins University Press.

For centuries Europe and Africa have been closely connected by history, languages and culture and benefited from geographical proximity. Moving forward, in an increasingly globalised and fast-evolving world the future of the two continents will be even more closely intertwined. To solidify this relation, CGD is launching its EU-Africa Roadmap to the new European Commission, on September 4 alongside Bruegel’s annual meetings. We offer four key proposals that are based on partnership of equals to further reinforce links between the two continents and go beyond development to tackle issues of common interest. Our distinguished panel will discuss how policy proposals on trade, migration, global health and finance can be taken forward under such a partnership.

In 2014 the largest ever outbreak of Ebola virus disease took the world by surprise. This infectious disease has one of the highest case fatality rates known to medicine and most of those who become ill die. Over 11,000 people died in West Africa before the outbreak was finally brought under control. The disease dealt a devastating blow to three of the world’s poorest countries and cost an estimated $5bn globally. No drugs or vaccines were licensed or available in mid-2014.

There are several lessons to be learned. Many potential solutions have been proposed to provide vaccine stockpiles or to undertake large scale prevention vaccination against future outbreaks. Professor Adrian Hill discusses the pros and cons of these and the likelihood of any receiving the financing that could allow them to happen.

As president of Malawi from 2012-2014, Banda was credited with turning around the nation's ailing economy. Under the economic reforms she instituted, Malawi's rate of economic growth rose from 1.8 percent in 2012 to more than 6.2 percent in 2014. In that same time span, Malawi's operational industrial capacity rose from 35 percent to 85 percent.

Banda also repealed a number of laws which had weakened democratic institutions, infringed on civil liberties and restricted freedom of the press. The health of women and children was a priority in Banda's presidency. She established the Presidential Initiative on Maternal Health and Safe Motherhood, which helped drop the maternal mortality rate in Malawi.

Before becoming president of Malawi, Banda served as the nation's vice president, foreign minister, minister of gender and child welfare, and as a member of its Parliament. As minister of gender and child welfare, she championed enactment of the Prevention of Domestic Violence Bill in 2006, which provided the legal framework to support the prevention and elimination of all forms of violence against women and girls.

Since leaving office, Banda serves on the boards of Nutrition International Canada and the Tana High Level Forum of Peace and Security in Africa. She is a member of the Council of Women World Leaders and a distinguished fellow with the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars and the Center for Global Development.

The founder of the Joyce Banda Foundation International in 1997, Banda continues her work with the foundation today to transform villages in Malawi by supporting women's economic empowerment, education, maternal health and HIV/AIDS programs, leadership training and human rights. She also serves as a panelist and motivational speaker at international conferences and forums.

Banda's work has drawn many honors. She was named one of the world's most powerful black women by Forbes magazine in 2013 and 2014; one of the most influential people in the world by Time and Forbes; and one of the most inspirational women in politics by CNN.

Her degrees include a bachelor's in gender studies from Atlantic International University and a master's in leadership from the Royal Rhodes University of Canada.
