What Liberia The Unity Party Left For CDC And How Is Liberia Under The CDC? A Debate between George Lobbo representing the Unity Party and MacCullay Wleh representing the Ruling CDC. Watch!!
The severity of the Ebola outbreak in West Africa could have been avoided had a global health security agenda been in place, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) said at Georgetown.
Although infectious disease outbreaks, from influenza to Ebola, surface with alarming frequency, more than 80% of the world has not yet developed an adequate response plan. Does your nation have one in place? Resolve to Save Lives has launched a new website that assigns an epidemic preparedness score to 180 countries, giving journalists, advocates and citizens the tools they need to drive change. Former CDC director Tom Frieden introduces the site, then is joined by three of the world’s leading experts on global health security to discuss the state of the planet’s preparedness for the next disease epidemic.
The Black Death took three years to infect Europe, whereas 2009’s swine flu pandemic crossed the world in three months. Harriet Mills, a scientist working to understand, and even predict these spreading events to aid more effective interventions, will describe how modelling infection can fight the next global health scare.

On Sept. 6th, the Center for China and Globalization (CCG) is honored and pleased to host a fireside chat with Paige Alexander, CEO at the Carter Center, and Liu Yawei, Senior Advisor for China at the Carter Center.
January 1st, 1979 remains one of the defining moments in modern history. On this day, former US President Jimmy Carter and Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping took the historic first step to formally establish the Sino-American diplomatic relations amid challenges and differences. This breakthrough then ushered in a new era of an enhanced bilateral rapport and subsequently enabled social and economic ties that have become more integrated than ever between the two countries. Forty two years later, this relationship is facing a delicate moment owing to increasing competition and shifting bipartisan views on China in the US. However, with increasing high-level interactions between senior officials of the two countries recently, can we look forward to another reshaping of China-US diplomatic relations?
The world-renowned Carter Center was founded by President Carter and his wife Rosalyn Carter in 1982, dedicated to missions on human rights, peace, and global development. Its remarkable achievements granted President Carter the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002. To this day, the Carter Center has been tirelessly forging path for peace and development for those who are in need and embracing the very core value of the Carters. What makes the Carter Center an exceptional organization? In what ways can it contribute to the US and China coordinating and partnering in resolving conflicts and health and development issues in the world?
The contributions made by President Carter to normalizing the Sino-American relationship and bringing peaceful solutions to global development, carried on by the Carter Center, proved that China-US friendship could transcend differences and peace and prosperity in the Asia Pacific region is achievable if the example of President Carter would be followed.

IDH and Mirova are pleased to hold this webinar on additional measures that agricultural/forestry companies and sustainable landscapes operators can take to halt the spread of COVID19, and support workers and neighbouring communities.
Many agricultural and forestry companies and sustainable landscapes operators with operations in emerging economies or fragile contexts have received instructions from national governments on on-site measures to be taken to halt the spread of COVID19.
With a growing concern about the impact of the crisis on health, food security and livelihoods, land based operators in these contexts may benefit from exchanging on practical measures to take, in line with or where appropriate in addition to following the government regulations, to help halt the spread of COVID19, and support their workers and neighbouring communities and local business partners.
To that end, this webinar will bring together experts and practitioners, to share information and insights on this topic, and provide a space for Q&A.
We have received numerous messages and we thank everyone for their input and questions. Together with our speakers we have tried to answer your questions in a summary report:

For much of its 164-year history, Liberia has enjoyed a special status among Africa’s nations. Founded in 1847 by freed slaves from the United States and the Caribbean, it was Africa’s first independent black republic, and people across Africa considered it both an inspiration and a beacon of hope. Nevertheless, the relationship between the African-American arrivals, known as Americo-Liberians or “Congo” people, and the many ethnic groups already present in Liberia, bore many similarities to European colonialism in the rest of Africa.

Although the African continent so far has escaped the kind of death toll and sickness seen in Europe and the United States, in recent weeks infections have grown exponentially, raising concern that the region could become the world’s next pandemic epicenter, according to the World Health Organization. Experts warn that if not controlled, COVID-19’s impact could be devastating, overwhelming local health services and worsening regions already caught up in natural disasters and conflict.
Pandemic angles for Africa’s investigative journalists are plentiful, from medical readiness and response to crunching the data and following the money. But like their colleagues elsewhere, reporters there face extra challenges digging into the many issues affected by the pandemic: heavy-handed censorship, secretive officials, and threats of prosecution and even violence. Despite all this, some great COVID-19 stories and investigations are being published and broadcast on the continent.
In this latest of GIJN’s webinar series “Investigating the Pandemic: The Threat to Africa,“ experienced African journalists shared their assessment of the COVID-19 coverage to date, offered suggestions for future investigations, and shared their strategies, tips and tools to help journalists to investigate the most important pandemic stories on the continent.
Dayo Aiyetan is the Executive Director of the International Center for Investigative Reporting in Nigeria; Mia Malan, the Editor-in-Chief of the Bhekisisa Centre of Health Journalism in South Africa; Dr Peter Mwesige is the Executive Director of the African Centre for Media Excellence; and Joshua Olufemi is the founder of Nigeria-based Dataphyte.
The moderator of this webinar is Asha Mwilu, Special Projects Editor, Citizen TV, Kenya.
This one-hour webinar is free and designed for journalists interested in investigating the pandemic. It’s the eighth in a GIJN series, Investigating the Pandemic. Watch our Twitter feed @gijn and newsletter (https://bit.ly/3bdYKSs) for future events.

In this episode, Zeinab Badawi travels to Ghana and Cote D’Ivoire to find out about the Asante people and their kingdom. We examine the history, myths and legends of the Asante people. We attend the Akwasidae, a colourful festival where the King of the kings of the Asante - known as the Asantehene - has his gold regalia on full display as a way of projecting wealth and prestige. And we hear about the great Asante queen who led the resistance against the invading British and hid the Asante’s most valued and sacred possession: the Golden Stool. The Asante serve as an example of how despite decades of colonial rule, Africans maintained their traditions and continue to revel in and perpetuate their heritage and customs.
