A nurse looks after her fellow travellers, even performing a terrifying operation to save a man’s foot without anesthetic. But amongst the trials and tribulations, come moments of joy, including the birth of a baby, named ‘Gbemani’, after the ship where he was born.

7 vehicle manufacturing companies in Africa. 7 cars manufactured in Africa. Almost every car bought and used by Africans is imported. Most of these cars are second hand thereby coming with high import duties. However, the African automobile industry is responding by manufacturing durable and affordable cars for some time now.The likes of Ghana Kantanka and Nigeria’s Innoson motors are changing the African automobile story. Here are eight cars seven African owned automobile companies changing the continent’s automobile narrative.

1.Birkin Cars (South Africa)
The South African-based automobile company started business in 1982 and can be said to be one of the oldest in the industry. The car is sold in various parts of the world including the United States, Japan, and across Europe. Birkin Cars is known for quality classic reproductions, including the SS3 Street Series and the CS3 Clubman Series

2.Innoson Motors (Nigeria)
The Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing Company was founded by Nigerian born entrepreneur, Innocent Chukwuma. They are the first technology company to manufacture cars in Nigeria. Innoson has produced at least 500 Nigeria-made cars at the cost of between N1.5- N3.5 million. Due to its wide range production, Innoson attracts patronage also from the Nigerian government. From their plant in Nnewi, Anambra, Nigeria, Innoson assembles various vehicles some of which are pickup vans, SUVs, and Buses.

3.Kantanka Cars (Ghana)
The Kantaka Automobile Company was established in Ghana by Dr Ing. Kwadwo Safo Kantanka. Kantanka produces both saloon and four-wheel drives. The company also has SUVs which include Nkunimdie and Kantanka Opasuo. Some Ghanaians and other Africans are already driving some of this made in Ghana cars. The vehicles are on sale at the Kantanka showrooms.

4.Kiira Motors Corporation (Uganda)
The interest of Kiira Motors Corporation (KMC) is different from the other automobile companies in Africa. The Ugandan automotive company is interested in creating a hybrid electronic vehicle. It was launched in 2014 by the engineering students of the University of Makerere who participated in the Vehicle Design Summit launched by MIT students in 2006. The company is supported by the Government of Uganda.
In its line of Cars, KMC has Kayyoola Solar Bus, Kiira EV Smack, and Kiira EV POC which has a battery bank capacity of 40AH and 207V.

5.Laraki (Morocco)
Moroccan businessman Mohamed Laraki founded it in 1999.
The company started by manufacturing Yacht and subsequently moved to produce luxurious supercars. In 2002, it produced the first car; Laraki Fulgura. The next car was Borac, followed by Epitome, and the company has continued to grow and evolve from then. Its 2013 Laraki Epitome Concept is sold for $2,000,000. It has a V8 engine, 1100 Horsepower (RPM), and a top speed that is estimated at 175 mph. Larakis are strictly concept cars, custom-built for each customer, and were ranked among the most expensive cars in the world in 2015, priced at over $2- million each.

6. Mobius Motors (Kenya)
Mobius Motors was founded in 2010 for the African market. released the first batch of their low-cost vehicles towards the end of last year.
The company uses simplified design concepts to produce efficient and cheap vehicles that can compete with second-hand vehicles that dominate the East African automotive market. The vehicles designed with the African road terrain in mind cost about $10,000

7.Wallyscar (Tunisia)
Founded in 2006, Wallyscar is manufactured in La Marsa, Tunisia. The company is known for building for affordable, reliable, and powerful 4X4s.
A report from 2014 suggested that the company sells over 600 units a year, mainly in Africa and the Middle East. One of the company’s main aims is to make its cars sporty, colourful, and environmentally friendly.

Nimko Ali leads a global campaign to end the barbaric practice of female genital mutilation. Richard Ratcliffe campaigns for the release of his wife from an Iranian prison. Three different activists talk about their campaigns and what they think it takes to be an activist in the 21st century.

If you look at activism around the world there seems to be an amazing sort of flowering of different approaches being taken to tackle these deep-seated problems. What does it take to bring about change in today’s world?

Nimko Ali’s activism grew from her personal experience as a survivor of female genital mutilation or FGM.

Richard Ratcliffe became an activist in 2016 when his wife Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe was accused of plotting to overthrow the Iranian government.

The most important thing is to keep that hope that the world can be different, the world should be different and, you know, by God will I make it.

In the summer of 2017, The Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Center brought together a group of residents around the theme of “Youth as Agents of Transformative Change.” Participants hailed from eight different countries, representing academia, the private sector, civil society, activist organizations, and the arts including novelists, composers, and musicians. And while the focus of the residency was on the subject of youth, the residents themselves ranged in age from those in their 20s to those in their 70s—with every decade in between represented. Over the course of two and half weeks, residents engaged in a unique intergenerational discussion about what motivates and inspires youth, the challenges they face, and how people of all ages can collectively enable transformational change.

This video highlights insights from the residency discussion about the impact of technology on how youth interact with one another to demand and realize change. While young people of every generation have taken action to push for change, today’s youth have more information at their disposal than ever before. They also have access to tools to connect with others across the world around shared values and interests, inspiring new modes of activism.
