Sudan's civil war, which raged from the 1980s until a peace deal was brokered in the early 2000s, marks the longest war ever to take place on the African continent. Dr. Hassan al-Turabi, who served as intellectual mentor of the Sudanese regime for much of the war, states that "We have never known slavery," although many in the south claimed that the north launched regular slave raids into their territory. "There were times when the situation seemed quite hopeless," remarks Nhial Deng, former SPLM Secretary of Foreign Affairs, on the fitful negotiations that finally led to a peace treaty in 2005.

She is a formidable, courageous woman - in charge of her boat, her business and her destiny.
Hers is a precarious living, but despite a life of hardship, her philosophical outlook and strong heart drive her forward.
Director/producer Akuol de Mabior is a South Sudanese filmmaker based in Nairobi, Kenya. She has directed short films that have been screened at festivals around the world and is currently working on her first feature documentary, Nyandeng, which received the Whickers Film and TV Funding Award (2020) and the IDFA Bertha Classic Fund (2020).

The Comoros, officially the Union of the Comoros, is an independent country made up of three islands in southeastern Africa, located at the northern end of the Mozambique Channel in the Indian Ocean.
African elephants are the largest living land animals in the world. They are currently listed as threatened by extinction. While they do have predators like lions, hyenas, wild dogs, and crocodiles, the greatest threats to African elephant populations are anthropogenic. African elephants spend most of their waking hours eating - some may eat upwards of 300 pounds (136kg) in a single day! In fact, African elephants have to eat so much food that they end up only sleeping about four hours each day. What a wonderful life. African elephant clans are made up of mostly females and immature males. Mature males live alone or in loose bachelor groups. The largest female of the group is typically the matriarch and her offspring are the first in line for taking over responsibility for the clan when she passes. African elephants are know to mourn the passing of their group members and are believed to have an excellent memory.

Range: fragmented populations across Africa mostly confined to protected sanctuaries

The thing about European History is that it tends to leak out of Europe. Europeans haven't been great at staying put in Europe. As human beings do, the people of Europe were very busy traveling around to trade, to spread religion, and in a lot of cases to try and conquer other people. In the 15th and 16th centuries, Europeans developed a bunch of tools and techniques that would allow them to travel around the world, in numbers and force heretofore unseen on the planet. And a lot of the results weren't great for the people who already lived in the places Europeans were "visiting."
