From Impunity to Accountability: Africa's Development in the 21st Century
Session 3: Models of the Past and New Paradigms: Evaluations Based on Country Experiences

November 18-19, 2010:

In this, the 22nd Social Research conference, speakers discussed the challenges of development that face African countries as they work to combat poverty, improve the protection of human rights, increase government accountability, strengthen electoral systems, and manage foreign aid.

Kelechi A. Kalu, Director for Center for African Studies and Professor in the Department of African American and African Studies at Ohio State University, spoke on "Nigeria: Learning From the Past to Meet Challenges of the 21st Century."

Berhanu Nega, Professor of Economics at Bucknell University, gave a talk on "Ethiopia: From Authoritarian Tradition to Democracy."

John Mukum Mbaku, Professor of Economics at Weber State University, presented a lecture on "Reconstituting Africa's Failed States: The Case of Somolia (Co-authored by Mwangi Kimenyi and Nelipher Moyo).

Befekadu Degefe, former Economics Research Fellow at The New School for Social Research, moderated the session, which concluded with Q&A.

The Social Research conference series was founded by Arien Mack in 1988. She is the Alfred and Monette Marrow Professor of Psychology at The New School for Social Research and editor of Social Research since 1970. For this conference, Dr. Mack is collaborating with Dr. Befekadu Degefe, an eminent Ethiopian economist and the New School's first University in Exile Scholar-in-Residence.
