AFI, afrikafé and Africa World Now Project present the 16th annual New African Film Festival, from March 5 through 19 at AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center, in Downtown Silver Spring. This year's festival features 39 films from 25 countries — 40% directed by women and 12 are North American or U.S. premieres — bringing the best in contemporary African cinema to the Washington, DC, area.

The program opens on March 5, with acclaimed Ethiopian historical drama ENCHAINED, featuring a Q&A with filmmaker Moges Tafesse. Other highlights include Burkinabé film DESRANCES, featuring Haitian American superstar Jimmy Jean-Louis; MY FRIEND FELA, an award-winning documentary about Nigerian music legend Fela Kuti; and Urbanworld Jury Prize winner THE GHOST AND THE HOUSE OF TRUTH, produced by Nollywood mogul Ego Boyo. The festival closes with a new restoration of Tunisian director Férid Boughedir's landmark survey of African cinema, CAMÉRA D'AFRIQUE, which first screened at the 1983 Cannes Film Festival; and returning for its fifth year on Saturday March 7, the African Marketplace, where attendees can shop local vendors selling African home goods, clothing, jewelry, books, and art.
