Barbra Banda's Hat-Trick Propels Zambia to a 6-0 Victory Over Angola in 2024 WAFCON Qualifiers
Barbra Banda showcased her prowess by scoring a hat-trick, extending her remarkable record to 47 goals for the Copper Queens. Zambia dominated Angola with a resounding 6-0 win, taking a significant step towards securing a spot in the 2024 WAFCON.
The Copper Queens asserted their intentions early on, with Racheal Kundananji finding the net six minutes into the game, though the goal was disallowed for offside. The breakthrough finally came in the 40th minute when defender Lushomo Mweemba scored from close range after Angola failed to clear their lines.
Captain Barbra Banda increased the lead to 3-0 five minutes later, converting a penalty after Kundananji was fouled in the box. Banda added another just before halftime, capitalising on a setup from Kundananji.
Zambia continued their dominance in the second half, with midfielder Ireen Lungu, based in Kazakhstan, making it 4-0 in the 57th minute. Banda completed her hat-trick in the 65th minute, reaching an impressive tally of 47 goals in 48 appearances for Zambia. The Copper Queens sealed the emphatic victory with Kundananji scoring, assisted by substitute Racheal Nachula.
Goalkeeper Catherine Musonda had a relatively quiet day, supported by the robust central defense partnership of Pauline Zulu and Mweemba.
With this commanding 6-0 win, Zambia positions itself favourably for the second leg scheduled for next week on Tuesday in Ndola at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium.
