Braids
The Afro hairstyle started in the 1950s with the peak of its popularity being the 1960s-1970s.
Styles soon evolved into hair straightening with the use of hot combs, jerry curls and relaxers, with the application of chemical creams and gels.

Braids gained popularity in the 1980s.
Braids have been worn by celebrities throughout the decades from Janet Jackson’s box braids in the 1990s to Beyonce’s lemonade braid (feed-in braids) in 2016.

Braids can be worn as a form of protective styling with styles including box braids, feed-in braids (Ghana braids), stitch braids, micro braids, goddess braids, spring twists, passion twists, crochet braids, faux loc’s, etc. These styles can be done to give the natural hair a break from styling and environmental conditions and weather (snow and rain).

Braids are done using human hair as well as synthetic hair fibers.
Braids can be worn in various shades and colours, including black and natural shades, brown, blonde, burgundy, grey, blue, ombre etc. The colours of the braids can be done to match the seasons e.g. blonde/brown for the summer, red/burgundy for the autumn and jet black/natural for the winter months.

Braids/cornrows are done under wigs and weaves as a form of protective styling and securing of own hair during the wearing of wigs and weaves.

Single braids can be worn in all down, half up half down, high ponytail, bun styles etc. Braid shape partings include triangular, square, half-moon, web parting, etc for creative and artistic design.

Braids can be worn for a few days to a few weeks and even a couple of months. It is advised that you remove braids before two months in order to wash, condition and oil natural hair in order to avoid breakage and hair damage.
Braids can be washed (or dry shampooed) whilst worn, oiled and brushed. A silk scarf or bonnet can be applied at night to maintain braid neatness during sleep.

Kids braids can be done with flower, heart etc. designs for style. Kids' hair accessories, such as coloured hair bands, bows, beads etc. can be added for colour and movement.
Extra care should be taken when doing kids' braids so as to not add tension or pressure to the child's head or hairline. It is not advised to leave braids in for long so as to cleanse and moisturise the child's hair.

Natural hairstyles came back into popularity in 2010 with styles such as braid outs, twist outs, wash and go’s, buns, up-do’s, braids and twists. The use of natural oils such as olive oil, coconut oil, castor oil and butters such as sheer butter has become commonly used on afro hair rather than the previous popular store-bought hair pomades and gels.

Lace wigs, frontal wigs, 360 wigs etc have gained popularity in recent years and are preferred by some for there convenience and speedy hairstyle transformation.

So if it is box braids, feed-in braids (Ghana braids), twist outs or frontals, wigs, etc. Afro hairstyles have evolved and continue to evolve through creativity.
