The first single "African Heroes" off the album of the same title by Barcelona based soukous/highlife band Afrikemet. Recorded in Slow Sound Studio, Barcelona, and released on Slow Walk Music on March 26, 2021.
This song talks about some of the great African (and African American) heroes who have fought for equal rights throughout the 20th and 21st century.
Video edited by Amir Sultan, recorded by Aaron Feder and Dani Bianchi. Special thanks to Alex Borstein.
AFRIKEMET is a band that emerged in Barcelona 3 years ago, in a memorable tribute to Papa Wemba, in the Afropolitan Sessions of Slow Walk Music. They play a modernized version of popular African music from the 60s / 70s. Styles such as soukous, afrobeat and highlife were the soundtrack of the period of African independence, along with others from the diaspora such as jazz, soul and funk, among many others, gave identity to a new society. The musicians jumped from the colonial hotels to the new clubs in the cities, and the songs lasted as long as the nights, mixing native rhythms with the new global sounds of the moment. Thus, new genres were born that would last and evolve to this day, such as zouk, hiplife, coupé-décalé, afrobeats, ndombolo, etc.

AFRICAN HEROES is their first album, on sale March 26, released by Slow Walk Music. It has been recorded, mixed and mastered, as analog as possible, looking for that original sound of the records of that time, while still sounding modern. It is popular African music with the immediacy of the moment we live in, the post-colonial nightlife of Barcelona. Songs without haste, to dance loose and close. You can imagine what the live show is like!

For this reason, it is no coincidence that AFRIKEMET revisits the music of DUSMINGUET, bringing together the three from La Garriga, for the first time since their band’s dissolution, to evoke a classic from the 1st album of the masters of the verbena. It is also no coincidence that they have collaborated on the latest TXARANGO album, or have prepared a version of a classic song from the GRATEFUL DEAD with members of Phil Lesh’s band.
The album was recorded in Barcelona in 2020, produced by Javi Zarco, Aaron Feder and Fernando Redondo "Dinky" mixed by the latter two at Slow Sound Studio and mastered by Alfonso Almiñana at Audiomagic, in Valencia.
