Topic: A Pan-Africanist Hare Krishna Movement in
Revolutionary Ghana
The late 1970s and early 1980s, a tumultuous and transformative period in Ghana’s
history, was marked by the circulation and embrace of multifarious new (and
existing) ideologies and religions. In this radical era, the International Society for
Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), popularly known as the Hare Krishnas, was
established in Accra through the missionary work of West African and diasporic
African devotees. This talk will present the fascinating Pan-African origins, obscure
early history, and possible impact of ISKCON in Revolutionary Ghana.
