IN THIS VIDEO we learn to dance the Malipenga from our partners Chisomo Kachapila of Abanthu Dance Group, and Mr. Joe Duma and his students Jacqueline Chimatula, Clement Chakhala and Buleya Safali of Music Crossroads in Malawi (https://www.facebook.com/musiccrossroadsmalawi/).

In the northern region of Malawi, a small, landlocked country in Southeastern Africa, people from the Tonga ethnic group perform a highly organized "war dance" called the Malipenga. The dance involves teams known as "Boma" who are organized in a military-style hierarchy with titles such as “sergeant,” “captain” and“kingi” and dance in rows. Wearing clothes that simulate British military/naval uniforms -- or sometimes exaggerated European clothes and hats with colorful feathers -- dancers (often playfully) reenact historical events that occurred in Malawi under British rule or teach lessons about cleanliness or respect for elders.

What is All Around This World?
All Around This World is a joyfully musical Cultural Inclusion program for children 0-9 years old that encourages kids and their families to explore the world by enjoying global music, rhythms, and movement. Jay Sand, guitarist and children’s music teacher, world traveler, dad of three girls, developed All Around This World with his daughters as a way to
introduce them to the countries he’s already visited and the many more he plans to visit with them. Treat the kids in your SCHOOL, LIBRARY COMMUNITY or FAMILY to an engaging, educational and FUN live class each week! Ask Jay about his live online classes for kids in YOUR COUNTRY on a weekday morning IN YOUR TIME ZONE.
