Over the weekend, numerous videos circulated on social media of an Israeli diplomat being publicly removed from the AU gathering in Addis Ababa. On Saturday, Sharon Barley led an Israeli delegation that was ejected from the conference hall of the African Union, an incident that Israel has strongly criticized as an act of "hate" instigated by Algeria and South Africa. Israel has called on other African states to also denounce the expulsion and has maintained that their Israeli diplomat had obtained the required authorization to attend the conference.
However, the head of the African Union, Moussa Faki Mahamat has come out to justify the AU's actions declaring that Israel's observer status with the organization had been suspended, resulting in the country being excluded from the weekend summit.
"Last year we discussed the question of Israel's status as an observer in the African Union. Following these various discussions, the conference decided to set up an ad hoc committee of heads of state on the question, which means that the statute is suspended until this committee can deliberate. And so we did not invite Israeli officials to our summit," he said.
