While Africa currently boasts the lowest proportion of older adults (aged 60 and above) within its population compared to other global regions, the continent is poised to witness a substantial increase in the number of older Africans. Projections indicate that between 2020 and 2050, the total number of older individuals in Africa is set to triple.

Nigeria, Africa's largest economy and most populous nation, holds the highest count of older citizens on the continent and ranks 19th globally in this aspect. The population of Nigerians aged 65 and older is estimated to nearly triple by 2050.

However, this surge in older Nigerians is unfolding within the context of persistent challenges, including severe poverty, unresolved developmental issues, socioeconomic disparities, the ongoing HIV/AIDS epidemic, and a decline in traditional forms of care and support for elderly individuals.

The absence of a functional national aging policy and a safety net comprising services and programs presents a unique predicament for older Nigerians and their families. This shift in demographics carries several implications, underscoring the critical importance of prioritizing healthy aging as a crucial area of concern.
