ASMARA - Eritrea: The African City of Women. Attractive Eritrean city of Asmara will be highlighted in today’s video. Asmara is the capital city of Eritrea. Asmara has a population of about One million people and it's one of the well-organized and neatest cities on the African continent.

Asmara, sometimes known as Asmera, is Eritrea's capital and largest city, located in the country's Central region. It sits at an elevation of 2,325 meters, making it the sixth highest capital in the world by altitude. The city is located at the tip of an escarpment that is both the northwestern edge of the Eritrean Highlands and the Great Rift Valley in neighboring Ethiopia.

In 2017, the city was declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its well-preserved modernist architecture. The site of Asmera was first settled in 800 BC with a population ranging from 100 to 1000. After long periods of conflict, four distinct villages merged to live together peacefully in the 12th century AD, and the city was created. Under Italian rule the city of Asmara was made capital of Eritrea in the last years of the 19th century.
