There are 2 ways in which block mountains are formed.
A. Upward movement of the middle block between two faults.
B. The side blocks of 2 faults move downwards and the middle block remains above.
The raised part of the block mountain is called the horst while the sunken part between two raised blocks is a graben.
Example of block mountains:
- Ruwenzori on Uganda and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). It is the tallest block mountain in the world.
- Ndoto, Nyiru and Matthews range (Lenkiyio hills) in Kenya.
- Usambara un Tanzania.
- Satpura and Vindhya in India.
- Salt range in Pakistan.
- Sierra Nevada, Warner, Wasatch, Klamath & Grand Tetons in USA.
- Vosges in France
- Harz and Black forest in Germany.
