Farming Cotton In Nigeria, Africa 1960's. Woman picking cotton. Map of world. Zoom in on Africa. Nigerian countryside, panning view across dry plains. Northern Nigeria, cattle grazing. Hausa people in a village of mud and thatch huts. Ass turns a press as sugar canes are juiced. Low rise building, Government laboratory. Office. Man combs cotton fibres and makes a display board out of the neatly arranged balls of fluff. Seed is prepared. Seed is cleaned in bucket. Dry seeds in a drum. Tractor ploughing field. Tractor towing a John Deere seed hopper and planting the field mechanically. Metal shed where supplies of cotton seed are handed out to farmers and their donkeys, who carry the sacks of seed on their backs. Farm labourers make channels for planting by hand. Women sprinkle fertiliser into seed drills. Man furrows soil by hand. Women plant seeds by hand. Young cotton plants in field. Man hows soil around plants. Plants are thinned out. More fertiliser is added. All work is carried out by hand. Field of cotton, with flowers. Pesticides are sprayed in field by men carrying drums of chemicals on their heads and a spray gun. Burst cotton bulbs ready for harvesting. Workers harvest cotton in dry environment. Cotton is collected and workers remove twigs and dirt. Cotton harvest being bought to market. Sacks and piles of cotton being traded, inspected, graded. Agents weigh the cotton and pay the farmer in cash. Giant sacks are bagged up. Truck transporting cotton sacks by road. Factory with many sacks in yard. Inside processing factory, ginnery, a cotton gin machine separates fibre and seeds. Feather light cotton fibre falling on floor and being packed into bales. Ginnery workers stitch covers around the bales. Cotton seeds are packaged into sacks and loaded onto trucks. Pyramids of sacks are stacked in a field, where workers then load sacks in rail carts. Train travels across countryside. River, port of Lagos, ship in dock. Ships are loaded with bales of cotton. Truck arrives in dock with sacks of seeds. Ship leaving port, with land just visible in the distance.
