Crime in Namibia
Namibia is, for the most part, a safe country to visit. However, it does have a rather high crime rate. Crime is a serious issue in Namibia's capital Windhoek and other areas throughout Namibia. Incidents such as muggings and bag snatching happen frequently, especially in areas frequented by foreigners.
Safety. Namibia is generally a very safe country, especially compared to neighboring South Africa. Still, the high rate of poverty and unemployment leads to a fair amount of opportunistic crime. The most common types of crimes are pickpocketing, purse-snatching, and vehicle theft and break-ins.
OVERALL RISK : MEDIUM. Windhoek is not very safe; crime rates are high. The most significant concern is theft, hacking, and carjacking. Being in this city, you should be especially careful and always monitor your things.
If you have hired a car to drive in Namibia, be extra careful. Driving at night outside urban areas is dangerous, as unlit roads make it difficult to see, and there are animals frequently crossing roads. If you are driving outside Windhoek, try to arrive at your destination before it becomes dark in the evening.
Namibia has a high rate of domestic violence, particularly against women and children. Rape and murder cases are frequent. The number of rape cases reported annually was estimated to be between 700 and 1,600 in 2010, and domestic violence is primarily done by men against women
