It was initially occupied by 4 clans; namely the Gheza Gurtom, the Gheza Shelele, the Gheza Serenser and Gheza Asmae. They lived in conflict and kept receiving attacks from the nearby clans. The women proposed that the 4 clans come together to fight against these external clans. This is where the word Asmara came from basically meaning They all came together. The city was originally a small village, but it grew in importance in the 19th century when it became a major trading center. In 1889, #asmara was occupied by Italy and became the capital of Italian #Eritrea. The Italians invested heavily in Asmara, and the city underwent a period of rapid modernization.
