Following the killing of three teachers during a jihadist attack last month in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo), dozens of school staff are refusing to return to class. More than 100 schools have remained closed since then, keeping schoolchildren at home.

The situation in DR Congo is compounded by the fact that around 6.9 million people have been forced from their homes this year, with the majority fleeing due to instability caused by the 200+ armed groups active in the eastern part of the nation. In recent developments, a militia group stormed the Masosi locality overnight on October 24, resulting in the tragic deaths of at least 26 people who were killed by machetes.

Dozens of school staff are protesting by refusing to return to class following the loss of their colleagues' lives in the recent jihadist attack. This has led to the closure of over 100 schools in DR Congo's eastern region of Beni for nearly two weeks.
