Principle 6: Find Stillness

Pleasure Muse: Dr. John Francis

Tantalizing Trivia:
*He gave up using motorized transportation and took a vow of silence that was intended to last one day. It lasted for 17 years.

*He completed three college degrees, including a Ph.D., while silent.

*He walked across the United States and is referred to as the “Planet Walker.”

*He was a pioneer of Black conservatism and environmentalism.

Mirror Work: While out on a walk find a patch of natural earth and take your shoes off. Look at your feet planted firmly on the ground. Imagine the healing powers of the universe shooting up through the arches of your feet. Feel stronger with each breath you take.

Watch: Dr. John Francis in his own words, explain his journey in his TED talk at https://tinyurl.com/TED-JohnFrancis-WalkTheEarth.

GirlTrek's Black History Bootcamp is a Webby Award-winning, first-of-its-kind walking podcast centered on Black stories. Through 21-day walking meditations, we reflect on stories of Black resilience and resistance to help Black women navigate these uncertain times.

During our seventh season, we present 21 Pleasure Principles. Together we will study the practical ways in which the ancestors were able to navigate and transform pain into pleasure. We will learn how to feel alive in our bodies. We will learn how to make choices that center our pleasure, and how to heal from within. Visit www.BlackHistoryBootcamp.com and register to get the daily Pleasure Principles syllabus in your inbox.

About GirlTrek:
There is a health crisis in America and Black women and girls are among the hardest hit. Every day 137 Black women die from heart disease. This is more than gun violence, HIV/AIDS, and smoking combined. And the effects of chronic stress are wearing on Black women mentally, physically, and spiritually. Black women die younger and at higher rates than any other group of women in the country: 82% of Black women are currently overweight, and 53% are morbidly obese (CDC, 2020).

GirlTrek is a solution. With 1.2 Million active members and counting, GirlTrek, which has been featured on CNN, The New York Times, Essence Magazine, and many other national publications, encourages Black women and girls to use walking as the first practical step to leading healthier, more fulfilled lives.
