The European Union’s border control is increasingly expanding towards West Africa. Since the mid-2000s, European security actors like the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) and the Spanish Guardia Civil have been present in different countries of the region. Following the EU Commission’s announcement in 2022 to conclude Frontex Status Agreements with both Mauritania and Senegal, these operations are set to deepen further.

Despite their unprecedented nature and profound implications for human rights and state sovereignty, these initiatives lack transparency and public scrutiny. This must change.
