Hundreds of policy-makers, researchers and academics gathered in London on 20 November to hear climate expert Fatima Denton give the 2014 Barbara Ward Lecture and call for the narrative on Africa and climate change to be rewritten.

Denton, the director of the special initiatives division of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), told her audience that it's time we told the real story about Africa and climate change.

The Barbara Ward Lecture is hosted by the International Institute for Environment and Development and features the current generation of outstanding women in development.

Speakers have featured former Ireland President Mary Robinson; Connie Hedegaard, European Commissioner for Climate Action; South Africa MP Lindiwe Sisulu, and Cristiana Figueres, executive secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.
