Maternal and neonatal mortality rates in the Sahel are among the highest in the world. Pregnant women, especially in rural areas, lack access to adequate health services to give birth. When Fatoumata Diallo heard about the midwife training being offered by the Sahel Women's Empowerment and Demographic Dividend Project (SWEDD), she didn't hesitate for a moment. After completing this training, she made the decision and received help from the project to open a private practice in her home village of Sebougou in Mali. The first woman to give birth at the practice was so happy she decided to name her baby girl after Fatoumata.
