Fashion brand Kate Spade last year decided to try a new take on traditional corporate social responsibility by starting what they call a corporate social enterprise in Rwanda.

“We took our business acumen, we took our fashion expertise, we took our entrepreneurial spirit and created a new channel for the organization,” said Sydney Price, senior vice president for CSR with Kate Spade.

In this video with Devex Impact’s Adva Saldinger, Price discusses how the company has in partnership with the Rwandan government a local business school and others helped a group of Rwandan women set up a business producing products for the company. The goal is that that group will eventually be competitive and can be integrated into the supply chains of other companies.
