G20 summit: Modi grants African Union permanent membership

After the European Union, the African Union (AU) became the second regional bloc to join the G20 on Saturday, after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi granted them a permanent seat.

In his opening remarks to the New Delhi Summit, Modi invited AU Chairman Azali Assoumani to take a seat at the table among other G20 leaders.

The addition of the AU offers a stronger voice for 55 African member states — something Modi, 2023’s G20 chairman, has previously campaigned for.

The G20 is comprised of the world’s richest and most powerful countries and meets annually to discuss world issues.
