Liberians are heading to the polls today, Tuesday, November 14, 2023, for a presidential runoff election following a first-round vote a month ago where the two leading candidates were separated by just over 7,000 votes.

The runoff features incumbent and former football star George Weah and former Vice President Joseph Boakai. President Weah narrowly won the first round but fell short of obtaining more than 50% of the vote, triggering the need for a runoff.

In the first round, Weah secured 43.8% of the vote, while Boakai received 43.4%. Both candidates have been working to build political alliances with the 18 other candidates who ran in the first round, none of whom received more than 3% of the vote.

This runoff election is a crucial moment for Liberia, as voters decide between the incumbent and a former Vice-President, shaping the political landscape of the country for the upcoming term.
