One of East Africa's leading virologists talks through new scientific approaches to understanding and tackling viral epidemics in Uganda and beyond.

For more than 30 years Uganda has been facing the devastating effects of the HIV epidemic, at the same time as emerging and re-emerging infections from other viruses including Ebola, Rift Valley Fever and COVID-19.

Professor Pontiano Kaleebu FMedSci is the Director of one of only two UK Medical Research Council scientific units based outside the British Isles. In this short talk, he explains his teams' multidisciplinary infectious disease research programme across rural and urban settings, including new infections, viral diversity and anti-retroviral drug resistance.

Professor Kaleebu is Director of the Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) and Director of MRC/UVRI and LSHTM Uganda Research Unit. He trained at Makerere University in Kampala and Imperial College London. He is also Professor of Immunovirology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

He gave this presentation as part of the Academy of Medical Sciences New Fellow's Admissions Day 2021, held virtually in July 2021.
