Supporters of Niger's military junta have rallied against foreign interference in the capital, Niamey, as the country marks its independence day. Protesters waved Russian flags as they demanded the immediate withdrawal of French troops stationed in Niger. Western countries as well as several of Niger's neighbours have condemned the recent coup. The west African regional group ECOWAS has imposed tough economic sanctions and is threatening military action. Neighbouring Nigeria has also pushed up the pressure by cutting off power supplies. Coup leader Abdourahamane Tchiani used an independence day address to condemn the threats of military intervention. The West African regional bloc known as ECOWAS has threatened Niger's junta with the use of force, as a last resort, if deposed President Mohamed Bazoum is not reinstated. The coup in Niger is not the first that ECOWAS has had to deal with in the region. Is a military conflict with West Africa´s regional block (ECOWAS) likely?
