The African Union (AU) says it supports the West African regional bloc ECOWAS' decisions on Niger and has called on the international community to save the life of President Mohamed Bazoum, whose detention conditions are deteriorating. This comes as ECOWAS approved the deployment of a standby force in Niger. The announcement was made after an emergency meeting of the Heads of State of the regional bloc in West Africa. It is not clear when the force will arrive in Niger.
The 15-member Economic Community of West African States yesterday said it has resolved to activate its standby force in response to the recent coup in Niger while underscoring its continued commitment to restore constitutional order in the country through peaceful means.
