KURA CORN GAME: Maize and Kenyan Elections

In the run up to almost every general election in Kenya, a maize shortage crisis is announced. The government then opens up a duty-free maize importation window which always winds up in a scandal. Unscrupulous individuals well connected to senior government officials take advantage of the situation and import maize into the country cheaply then sell it at exorbitant profits. Those who bear the brunt of this corruption are the maize farmer and the ordinary Kenyan consumer. This documentary looks at this pattern which is already unfolding in the countdown to the August 9, 2022 election. It also explains why Kenya is likely to face hunger in future as many maize farmers scale down production due to frustration and high input cost.
