The traditional Mandinka playing method uses three drums.
Currently, the smallest drum , which plays the role of keeping the rhythm, is often played by two drums. There are also groups that use up to 5 or 6 drums in one group. Bugarabu , the traditional drum of the Jola tribe, which is common in the Casamance region, uses a similar number of drums.
