Niger coup: ECOWAS agrees on military “D-day” as UN says Bazoum prosecution has “no legal basis”

On Friday, West Africa's main regional bloc, ECOWAS, agreed on and set an official "D-day" in an attempted step towards restoring democracy in Niger.

ECOWAS had said on Thursday that if diplomatic efforts against the military junta — which seized power in the country and kidnapped democratically-elected President Mohamed Bazoum last month — fail, it will answer to the “call of duty” and intervene with its own military forces.

Though ECOWAS is still open to negotiations as they prepare their offensive, their threat came about after the military junta in power threatened to prosecute Bazoum for high treason last week — a crime which is punishable by execution in Niger.

In response to the potential prosecution of the captive Bazoum, the UN's high commissioner for human rights, Volker Turk, said on Friday that there is “no legal basis.”
