Nigeria Fashion: how to make Yoruba Tie-and-Dye cloth (Real-life Yoruba Movies)

(Real-life Yoruba Movies - Nigeria Fashion) It's one of South-West Nigeria's most traditional textile art forms and the root of Yoruba's sharp fashion sense... Adire! Or, as it's known around the world, Tie-and-Dye.

"The busines is an old business but its still existing - people are still buying," says Baba Biobaku Odubala, a Tie-and-Dye artisan in Surulere, Lagos. "This is a surviving business!"

To make the the textile art, Baba Odubala first pours the chemicals into a large bowl, then adds hot water and proceeds to mix the cloth in the dyed deep-blue water. The secret is to tie the textiles tightly at certain knots to stop the dye soaking in and so give the cloth that particular "tie and dye" colourful look.

"You can make women's jackets, up and down, and even house materials like dining table - there is nothing you can't turn it into," says Baba Odubala.

In his street there are at least ten other Tie-and-Dye artisans, and despite challenges from Western clothing and cheap Chinese textiles - it is a thriving industry across South-West Nigeria.

But while many of the artisans in Surulere are male, Adire is traditionally a female-dominated craft. Around Ibadan and Abeokuta the Adire technique can be incredibly complex and beautiful with decades of experiences handed down through the family generations.

As his work today is unfurled to dry in the sun, Baba Odubala smiles at his latest cloth: "It has been my major work - I feel fine because I know what I'm dong and it comes out how I want."
