The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) is projected to usher in many benefits for Africa's 1.4 billion people. However, despite such positive predictions, some countries such as Nigeria, Egypt, and South Africa seem to be acting in ways that could undermine the free trade area.

For the AfCFTA to succeed, each individual country needs to adopt liberalising reforms that make it easier for goods and services to flow across the continent. Unfortunately, Nigeria, South Africa and Egypt, the continent's three largest economies, seem to be embracing greater protectionism.
