Senators from Northern Nigeria have called on West African leaders to lift the sanctions imposed on the Niger Republic following a military coup in that country. In July, after coupists ousted President Mohamed Bazoum, the Heads of State of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) imposed sanctions on Niger, including the suspension of all commercial transactions.

The sanctions led to Nigeria cutting off power supply to the Niger Republic, and Ivory Coast suspended imports and exports. After a meeting at the National Assembly, the Northern Nigerian senators urged West African leaders to reconsider and lift these sanctions. Additionally, they called on the Niger junta to release the ousted President Bazoum and establish a transition timeline lasting no more than two years.

In a communiqué read by Senator Abdul Ningi, the lawmakers expressed strong condemnation for military interventions in democratic spaces within some West African sub-regions. The call to lift sanctions reflects the senators' push for a diplomatic resolution and a swift return to democratic governance in the Niger Republic. The situation remains a focal point for regional discussions on political stability and adherence to democratic principles.
