Orania - The 'Whites Only' Town that's rapidly growing in South Africa.
Three decades have passed since South Africa ended its system of racial segregation between black and white citizens. And although apartheid was abolished in the country in the 1990s, some areas still harbor its remnants. Orania, is one of these locations and typically depicts the final bastion of apartheid.
Orania is a small town in the Northern Cape province of South Africa that has gained notoriety for its controversial segregation policy of only allowing white people to live within its borders. Founded in 1991, Orania was established as a separate community for Afrikaners, a group of South Africans descended from Dutch, French, and German settlers who speak Afrikaans as their first language. The town's founders were motivated by a desire to preserve Afrikaner culture and language, which they saw as under threat in post-apartheid South Africa. To achieve this, the founders of Orania implemented a number of discriminatory policies, that have been in play, even to date. , Join us in our video today as we explore Orania - The whites-only town in South Africa.
